Rudolf von Bitter Rucker, más conocido como (Rudy Rucker) nació el 22 de marzo de 1946 en Louisville, Kentucky (EE.UU.).

Estudió en el instituto de St. Xavier, se tituló en matemáticas por el Swarthmore College y obtuvo un máster y un doctorado en matemáticas por la Universidad de Rutgers.

En 1967 se casó con su novia del colegio Sylvia, con quien tuvo tres hijos: Georgia, Rudy, Jr., e Isabel.

Desde 1972 hasta 2004 dió clases en centros como la Universidad de Nueva York, la de Heidelberg, el colegio femenino Randolph-Macon o la Universidad estatal de San José.
